New Entry-Level Servers Due from IBM
Friday, January 18, 2008
By bMighty.com Staff
During a conference call to present its 4Q2007 earnings, IBM announced that its Power6 chips would be extended into the lower-end models of its System p UNIX servers.
The popularity of the Power6 chips was credited with the solid growth in earnings for IBM's System p high-capacity servers over the past year. Until now, however, the chip has only been available in midlevel and blade servers. "Later this quarter we will announce and ship Power6 technology in System's entry segment," said the company's Chief Financial Officer Mark Loughridge during the conference call.
IBM's current entry-level server, the p5-505 Express, starts at $3,399 and is described by the computer giant as "an exceptional choice for smaller and mid-size companies."
