HP Ships Disk Array Especially for Midsize Businesses

Hewlett-Packard has introduced a new disk array targeted at midsize businesses that don't have overly complex storage needs but require more than entry-level gear.

The HP StorageWorks 4400 Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA4400), available now and starting at $15,000, consolidates eight drive and two controllers in one shelf. That cuts down on cost, according the Kyle Fitze, director of marketing in the SAN division of HP's StorageWorks group. Another benefit for midsize companies: HP says the system can be set up in less than an hour, without the need for a storage specialist.

The EVA4400 supports up 96 TB of storage, with drives ranging from 146 GB to 1 TB. HP also announced a new Fiber Channel offering that can be used with the array to double the speed of a typical SAN from 4 Gbps to 8 Gbps.
