Verizon Won't Slow P2P Service "at the Current Time"

Verizon Communications says it does not need to manage peer-to-peer traffic because it has "more robust" networks than cable operators, but that it can't promise it won't need to in the future.

Speaking at a discussion with supporters at Verizon headquarters, executive vice president Tom Tauke said that unlike cable Internet subscribers, Verizon customers have direct lines to their homes and do not have to share capacity with others. For that reason, "we see no need at the current time to slow peer-to-peer traffic," Tauke said.

However, he went on to speak about the importance of "legitimate" and "appropriate" network management to make sure the network continued to run smoothly. Tauke also implied that if Verizon did change its policy, it would let consumers know.

The comments came in the midst of the controversy over Comcast throttling BitTorrent traffic (which the FCC is looking into) and AT&T's announcement of plans to test filtering Net traffic for copyrighted content.
