Palm-Sized, Eco-Friendly Servers Coming to U.S.

Japanese Linux pioneer Plat'Home is set to introduce its tiny OpenBlockS server to the North American market.
Plat'Home calls the OpenBlockS server a "small, easy-to-use, easy-to-configure solution for growing companies." The system measures 4.5 x 3.2 x 1.5 inches and consumes 4.5 watts in operation and 4 watts in standby -- the company claims that a single standard Dell, HP, or IBM server uses as much power as 76 OpenBlockSs. The server attains its small energy footprint through the elimination of moving parts like hard disks and fans. It is also free of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and other toxic substances.
Network operators can administer an OpenBlockS server over the network without needing to attach a monitor or keyboard to the server. Sold in Japan since 2000, the Plat'Home microservers are used by government agencies, software engineering firms, and educational institutions for purposes ranging from VPN and VoIP to firewalls, routers, and spam filters.
