Dell to Keep Selling XP After June

Friday, April 25, 2008
By bMighty.com Staff

Dell has announced that customers who want to buy a PC with Windows XP preinstalled will still be able to do so after the official cutoff date in June.

Microsoft's system builder license permits a vendor like Dell to sell a version of XP as part of "downgrade rights" so long as the customer purchases Vista as well. Usually that means the customer gets Vista preinstalled on a computer along with XP on a disc that enables them to keep running the old OS until they're ready to upgrade.

Dell's departure is in offering to preinstall that version of XP if the customer requests, even after XP's official June 30 end-of-life date. The customer buying Vista Business or Ultimate will be able to get their PC with XP Professional installed, along with a Vista Business or Ultimate DVD and license and an XP Professional CD.
