EMC to Offer SaaS Content Management

EMC has announced that it will be expanding its Documentum content management and archiving platform and making it available in a Software as a Service (SaaS) model in order to serve the needs of SMBs.

The changes will focus on four key business functions: content management, transaction processing, and forms capturing; information and legal discovery compliance, including archiving and discovery for e-mail; online collaboration, with support for wikis, blogs, and mashups; and interactive content management.

Mark Lewis, president of EMC's Content Management and Archiving Division, acknowledged that many small and midsize businesses need these capabilities but cannot afford an installation of Documentum. For this reason, Lewis said, "XML and SaaS (software as a service) will be an integral part of all these moves. We can use XML to share content as a service. We have to treat information management and content management as a service within a group of services."
