Microsoft SBS 2008 Won't Do Client Backup

Microsoft has announced that the initial release of its Small Business Server 2008 will not incorporate the ability to back up PC clients.

Chris Almida, a program manager with the Windows Small Business Server team, made the announcement at SBS Migration's IT Pro 2008 Conference. SBS 2008 is due to ship later this year, and Microsoft decided to leave out client backup to make sure the product shipped on time. The company did hold out the hope that the feature would be added in a later versin.

Client backup has been a popular feature in Windows Home Server, and Microsoft partners had hoped it would also be part of SBS 2008 but appeared resigned to Microsoft's decision. "Client backup would have been a nice-to-have, but I'd rather see SBS 2008 be very stable than have to sacrifice stability for a feature that we may or may not have used," said John Endter, president of E Squared C, a Small Business Specialist based in Minden, Nev.
