Powerset Debuts Semantics-Based Search Engine

Monday, May 12, 2008
By bMighty.com Staff

Start-up Powerset is giving users a beta whirl at a new search engine that puts natural language, versus keywords, to work.

When Powerset makes its official debut, it will search only Wikipedia, enabling users to type queries as fully formed phrases and questions. Doing so yields more relevant results, says the San Francisco-based company, which also acknowledges extending its search technology to the entire Web would be a huge undertaking considering the amount of computer power it takes to study the meaning of entire sentences. Plans call for the company to broaden its technology to news articles and blog posts.

There's also some talk that Powerset could soon be up for sale; possible bidders are said to be Microsoft and even Google, but mainly to keep Powerset out of Microsoft's hands.
