Hosted services provider Rackspace has announced an online storage service for Web and software development.

The service, called CloudFS, will be available late this year through Rackspace's Mosso hosting division, which also offers e-mail hosting. A competitor to Amazon's S3 storage cloud service, CloudFS could also eventually offer an online backup service..

According to John Engates, Rackspace's chief technology officer, CloudFS will support applications built with Java, Microsoft .Net, PHP, Python, Ruby on Rails, and other popular programming languages. The offering is targeted at developers and businesses building Web sites, Web 2.0 applications, and social networking media, among other uses.
