Nokia Acquires Social Networking Startup

Monday, June 23, 2008
By bMighty.com Staff

Continuing its push into the mobile services world, Nokia has announced plans to buy Plazes, a Berlin-based social networking startup.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Plazes' location-based platform works on both mobile phones and Windows and Mac OS X computers; the 3-year-old company is also readying iPlazer, a new app for Apple's iPhone. " It was important to make sure that whoever buys us is actually interested in running and improving the service. So be prepared for some continuous improvements in the months to come," states Plazes' blog.

The deal -- just a few weeks after Vodafone's similar acquisition of ZYB -- is expected to close in Q3. Nokia has not been quiet about its desire to "transform itself into a next-generation entertainment company." Nearly a year ago it launched Ovi, an Internet service and online music store, and before that bought Gate5, whose technology fuels Nokia Maps.
