Rumors appear to be solidifying that Google's Android-based smartphone will hit market next month.

Open Handset Alliance.

When the phone goes on sale, likely Sept. 17, it will be for T-Mobile customers only at the reduced price of $150. G1 will go into general release a week later, priced between $250 and $400.

The phone, developed by mobile-device maker HTC and said to be named G1, is expected to match many of the capabilities of Apple’s iPhone, RIM's BlackBerry and Palm's offerings. The phone will feature a 5-inch x 3-inch touchscreen that also slides out to expose a full five-row keyboard, 3G connectivity and a 3-megapixel camera. Its Android operating system, which relies on Linux version 2.6 for core system services, is the work of the Google-led Open Handset Alliance.
