This Year's Data Breaches Already Exceed 2007 Total
Tuesday, August 26, 2008
By bMighty.com Staff
The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) lists 449 breaches for 2008 so far, up from 446 for all of last year.
ITRC founder Linda Foley described the numbers as "a little frightening, knowing that we're four months ahead of last year." However, she also acknowledged that the increase could be partly due to better reporting. Rather than indicating a deteriorating security situation, the rising number of reported data breaches may just mean corporate security auditors are better at finding compromised systems, she suggested. According to a survey taken at the 2008 RSA Conference, more than 89 percent of security incidents went unreported in 2007.
