And the Winner of the Waiting Game is….Microsoft!!

Posted by Naomi Grossman 12:39 PM ET | Aug 31, 2007

Hey, want to win a lawsuit even if you lose? Or better yet, want to get a verdict against you overturned even when it isn't? Just drag the original lawsuit out, oh, say about four years and when you lose in court file an appeal and let that drag on another four years.

It worked like a charm for Microsoft.

To Dream the Impossible Wi-Fi Dream

Posted by Naomi Grossman 02:28 PM ET | Aug 30, 2007

The efforts in certain cities to provide free Wi-fi access to all reminds me of the efforts to provide universal health care coverage in this country: Everyone agrees that it's a great idea; everyone knows that it would be beneficial to many; but a combination of politics and finances keep stalling those efforts.

The latest Quixotic attempt to provide free Wi-fi access came in Chicago. The city wanted to create a citywide wireless Internet network but after less than two years of trying to get the project off the ground, the city just announced that it is shelving the project.

Google To Follow Apple into the Cell Phone Market?

Posted by Paul Korzeniowski 07:37 AM ET | Aug 30, 2007

By Paul Korzeniowski
Cell phones seem to be primary currency in today’s high tech market. Now that the Apple iPhone buzz is dying down, reports
are that Google, is about to become the next industry heavyweight to jump into the market. These vendors seem to think that cell phones are a good way to connect with the young, hip buyers who dictate which products are cool and which are passé. However, cell phones are a mature market, one ready to Jump the Shark, and the vendors’ misreading of the market may benefit medium and small businesses.

Most Small Businesses Are Security Over-Confident

Posted by Keith Ferrell 11:51 AM ET | Aug 28, 2007

That's what a new study says, anyway -- 80 percent of small to midsize businesses don't block (or, by implication, monitor) employee use of computers for file-sharing or use of USB devices, three-quarters allow unfettered Instant Messenging, nearly half don't even have spyware controls installed, and a staggering percentage don't regularly update what security software they do have. Yet most feel confident that their companies are protected.

Where's the Beef in Acer's Gateway PC Buy?

Like the Wendy's customer asked way back when: where's the beef in today's $710 million takeover of Gateway by Taiwanese computer maker Acer?

Sure, the deal makes Acer the number 3 PC-maker in the world, pushing past mainland China's Lenovo (which got that big by swallowing IBM's PC business). I just don't think it's likely to have an immediate impact on small and midsize computer buyers.

Craigslist: King Of The Hiring Heap

Posted by Fredric Paul 07:55 PM ET | Aug 24, 2007

It’s Time to Take a Close Look at Business Ethernet Services

Posted by Paul Korzeniowski 07:53 AM ET | Aug 23, 2007

Tired of the company’s LAN and WAN acting like spoiled fraternal twins, who simply can’t get along with each other? WAN Ethernet services offer medium and small companies a chance to streamline their management tasks by providing a consistent network transport from users’ desktop though the WAN. After a slow ramp up, these services are now taking root and offer companies a range of speeds from 10M bps to 1G and a variety of wiring options. As a result, businesses should look to them to support their WAN bandwidth requirements.

Ready to Lock Up Your Employees’ iPods?

If you thought that you had your company’s security concerns under control, you may have to think again. The widespread success of Apple's iPod is creating new security concerns for enterprises. Chances are that it has become just that at your company; security supplier Credent Technologies found that 61 percent of employees use their iPods at work. Perfect 10, a magazine that publishes images of naked women, is steamed at Microsoft's MSN search engine, which is linking images of these nubile young women to Web sites that have not paid for viewing, let alone duplicating, its pictures and videos. Some of these Web sites have even been cutting and pasting celebrities’ faces on top of the models’ bodies. Perfect 10 claims that the search engine could greatly curb the problem if it would simply delist obvious infringers but such a step would adversely affect their revenue. To force such actions, Perfect 10 hauled Microsoft into court at the end of last week

Is the iPhone mighty for smaller companies?

Posted by Fredric Paul 09:43 PM ET | Aug 6, 2007

Is the iPhone a legitimate business tool, or just the cool toy of the moment: the grown-up equivalent of Tickle-me-Elmo?

I've played around with one a bit, and I'm still not sure. It's not as good at handling email as the pathetically uncool Blackberry 8700 that bMighty.com has deigned to equip me with. And making a phone call is wayyyy too complicated.

But the thing is undeniably beautiful, and it's by far the best portable Web experience I've seen, at least when connected to a Wi-Fi network. And that has real business applications.

So, despite its consumer roots, I think the iPhone has a real place in small businesses.
