Microsoft and Linux - Strange Bedfellows or A Match Made in Heaven?

Posted by Paula Hunter Tuesday, Aug 21, 2007, 03:06 PM ET

If you have been gun shy about deploying Linux in your Windows environment, it is getting easier.

It seems as if Microsoft has decided that if they can't beat Linux, they may as well cozy up. Last year's relations with Novell caused a stir, but it appears that they are more than happy to help other Linux vendors integrate with them as well. Xandros has recently announced that they have licensed technology from Microsoft that will allow Xandros's mail server software (Scalix) to better interoperate with Microsoft clients.

Why is this good for Microsoft? Protect the desktop? Appear more friendly to the open source community? Neither one equates to big dollars (yet).

I will set aside my suspicions and congratulate Xandros on a good move. It will make it easier for companies to deploy Linux into a windows environment, and help small and medium businesses break the stranglehold MS has on smaller IT organizations.
