Internet Job Seeking Now Tops Newspapers

Posted by Fredric Paul Monday, Oct 15, 2007, 10:16 PM ET

The Conference Board says that this year, more people looked for jobs online in the newspaper -- 73% to 65%. Just two years ago, those percentages were pretty much reversed.

According to The Conference Board, 73% of people looking for a job this year used the Internet, up from 66% of job seekers in 2005. Back then 75% used newspapers, compared to just 65% this year. Of course, most people use more than one method, including 51% networking through friends and colleagues and 24% methods such as employment agencies.

In addition, people are using the Net for more aspects of their job searches, including gathering employer/job information (59%), submitting resumes and applications (57%), posting resumes on the Web (40%), and signing up for email notifications (30%).

What does that mean for small and midsize companies? Hopefully it means you can concentrate your hiring efforts on lower cost Internet methods. As usual, I recommend Craigslist.
