Microsoft Wants to Stick XP on XOs

Posted by Cora Nucci Monday, Oct 29, 2007, 11:39 AM ET

Like an uninvited birthday party guest who shows up on the wrong date with an unwanted gift, Microsoft is "working to adapt a basic version of Windows XP so it is compatible with the non-profit One Laptop per Child Foundation's small green- and-white XO laptop."

The XO laptop currently runs on a version of Linux.

Let's just say the Internets are not raving about this move. "It'll be XP crippled, and only work on those wacky laptops," wrote davester666 on Slashdot.

In other XO news, the price of the $100 laptop has crept up to $200. That's up from $188 a few weeks ago, which was above the $150 price tag in February and $176 in April.

Meanwhile, back at the plant, production bugs may delay some XO laptops from being delivered according to schedule.

Whatever the production problems are, they should not impact the OLPC's Give 1 Get 1 promotion, which begins November 12.
