Business Security Lessons From 60 Minutes

Posted by Keith Ferrell Sunday, Nov 25, 2007, 11:36 PM ET

Nice piece on information security on this week's 60 Minutes, with Lesley Stahl being walked through venues from wireless network vulnerabilities to stolen credit card number auctions.

The piece is online now (you have to watch a commercial first) and is well-worth a viewing (it runs a bit more than 13 minutes.)

Clearly, you're not going to cover much of anything in much depth in less than a quarter of an hour, but Stahl and crew do a good job within the limitations of time.

The best part of the segment for small and midsize businesses is, I think, that very basic walk-through approach to security issues, particularly for the non-IT side of your company. Might want to pass this one around as recommended viewing for all employees, both as a way of making them aware of just what the security stakes are and, not incidentally, making them better stewards of their own information.

Best part for IT professionals? The reminders that the management of hacked TJX (parent company of TJ Maxx) had been warned of their network vulnerabilities but took no action, because action cost money.

If that sounds familiar, make sure your management sees the segment too. Maybe twice.
