Firefox 3: Initial Impressions
Posted by Naomi Grossman Tuesday, Jun 17, 2008, 12:22 PM ET
Unless you're living under a rock you know that the much-anticipated release of Firefox 3.0 is happening today. But some reviewers didn't let a little thing like an official release time stop them from getting their hands on the RC version and sharing their thoughts.
Over at ZDNet, Adrian Kingsley Hughes likes the very new look of the browser and the new and improved features. He calls Firefox 3.0 "the first true browser’s browser." He also praises it for being not just faster, but "noticeably faster."
At ChannelWeb, Samara Lynn asks: "With the final release of RC2 version 3, could Firefox become the IE slayer?"
The answer CW's Test Center found: "Not quite yet. Firefox has made some really great strides over previous versions with this release. There are an abundance of new features which can really give IE 8 (which is still in beta) a run for the money."
Still, Lynn concludes her review: "With a host of improvements and features (some not even available in IE) plus its enhanced malware security, Firefox will continue to singe the stranglehold IE has in the browser space. Whether it can reduce IE to ashes, remains to be seen."
PC Pro's review terms the upgrade not a "radical" one but adds that "it contains a healthy dose of new features that make day-to-day surfing more pleasurable."
Adds PC Pro: "On the face of it, it doesn't look as if much as altered. Indeed, you'd be hard pressed to spot the difference between Firefox 2 and 3. Beneath the surface, however, there are several new or revamped features that make the newcomer a far more powerful web browser."
Smaller businesses, are you going to go for it? Let us know in the comments. But remembver, if you do, you could be part of tech history.
