Smartphones Attract Women

Posted by Fredric Paul Tuesday, Jun 10, 2008, 02:37 PM ET

No, sorry, carrying one doesn't turn a man into a babe-magnet. Instead, it turns out that more and more women want their own smartphones.

According to a new report released today from Nielsen Mobile smartphone use is growing faster among women than it is among men.

Yesterday, I wrote about how the smartphone's time has finally arrived, and these statistics only solidify that notion. According to InformationWeek's coverage of the report, "the number of women buying smartphones nearly doubled to 10.4 million."

Perhaps it's because the emergence of the stylish iPhone made the devices appear less geeky. Almost a third of iPhones are owned by women. But there's a halo effect too, as Blackberry's and Palm devices are also gaining acceptance among women, especially the BlackBerry Curve and the cute little Palm Centro. InformationWeek reports that Palm claims some two-thirds of Centro buyers are female.

It only makes sense. Women today are busy juggling work and family obligations, and smartphones can make that easier. Heck, you even see women walking around wearing Bluetooth headsets. Sometimes, technological utility trumps all.
