Did You Know That iPhone 3G Has a User's Manual?
Posted by Alan Zeichick Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008, 11:41 AM ET
When you look inside the box from a new Apple iPhone 3G, you'll find a handset, a cleaning cloth, an AC adapter, a USB cable, ear buds, and a warranty document. What you won't find is an owner's manual. But there is one!
Third-party publishing companies have been capitalizing on the apparent lack of documentation for the iPhone 3G by offering books, book and more books. You can order many books online, get them at Apple stores, or even your favorite bookstore.
However, Apple actually does have a decent users manual, available for free download from the Apple support site. It's hard to find there, so use this link. The 152-page PDF document is clearly written and very comprehensive, with chapters on:
1. Getting started
2. Basics
3. Phone
4. Mail
5. Safari
6. iPod
7. More applications
8. Settings
9. iTunes store
Appendix A. Troubleshooting
Appendix B. Other resources
Before you go crazy trying to figure out everything yourself, or shell out hard-earned cash for an aftermarket book, download and read the documentation. With one quick read, I've already picked up some tricks:
Page 68: Deleting Videos from iPhone: You can delete videos from iPhone to save space. In the videos list, swipe left or right over the video, then tap Delete. When you delete a video (other than rented movies) from iPhone, it isn’t deleted from your iTunes library and you can sync the video back to iPhone later. If you don’t want to sync the video back to iPhone, set iTunes to not sync the video.
Page 80: Take a screenshot of iPhone’s display: Quickly press and release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. A flash of the screen lets you know the screenshot was taken. The screenshot is added to the Camera Roll.
Page 94: Scientific Calculator Keys. When using the calculator, rotate iPhone to landscape orientation to display the scientific calculator.
Page 108: Set whether caps lock is enabled: Choose General > Keyboard and turn Enable Caps Lock on or off. If caps lock is enabled and you double-tap the Shift key on the keyboard, all letters you type are uppercase. The Shift key turns blue when caps lock is on.
